Grants & Underwritings

The Canterbury Arts Council (CAC) grants & underwriting scheme is open to individuals or organisations, amateur or professional, which are either based in the Canterbury district (including Whitstable, Herne Bay & environs) or are seeking funding for an event or project in the district.  All applicants must be affiliated members of CAC.

CAC accepts applications for grants towards specific projects and for underwriting guarantees against loss for individual events.  For musical, dramatic or dance events, it is usual practice to offer guarantees against loss only, although applications for grants may be considered in special circumstances.

Requests for funding may be submitted to CAC by completing the application form online or after downloading.  This may be done at any time, subject to applications being received before the event takes place.  There are two funding rounds each year, with applications received by the closing dates of 31st May and 30th November normally being reviewed in the following June and January respectively.  Applicants should allow up to 6 weeks from the closing dates to receive notification of whether their funding has been approved.  It is not possible for CAC to provide funding at other times of the year.

Organisations or individuals will normally be required to serve a minimum term as a CAC member before becoming eligible for funding and only one application per year will be considered.  These conditions may be waived in special circumstances.

For grants, 80% of the funding is released immediately after approval, with the final 20% being paid on receipt of a completed evaluation form, which is designed to gather evidence of the effectiveness of our aims of supporting grassroots arts activities in the district. For guarantees, any payment is only made after the event has taken place and CAC has received proof of financial loss, together with a completed evaluation form.
